Warts

Warts

Warts are a benign skin infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are common on the hands, the soles of the feet and the knees, and very frequent in children.

How do they spread?

Through direct contact or via damp surfaces such as swimming pools and showers. Scratching or biting them makes them spread more easily.

How are they treated?

The most common options are cryotherapy in the clinic and keratolytic treatments at home, such as salicylic acid. For stubborn warts there are alternatives such as other topical medicines, curettage, electrocoagulation or laser.

When to see a dermatologist

If there are many, they hurt when walking, they are on the face or genital area, or they do not improve with pharmacy treatments. Genital warts (condylomas) always need a medical assessment.
