Moles (naevi)
Moles, or naevi, are benign clusters of the cells that give skin its colour. Almost everyone has them, and the vast majority never cause problems. Even so, checking them is the best way to detect melanoma early.
Signs to watch for
The ABCDE rule helps: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, uneven Colour, Diameter over 6 mm and Evolution (changes in size, shape or colour). Also watch for a mole that itches, bleeds or looks different from the others (the “ugly duckling”).
The check-up
The dermatologist examines the skin and studies moles with dermoscopy, a technique that reveals structures not visible to the naked eye. If a lesion looks suspicious, it can be removed with minor surgery and analysed.
Who should get checked
People with many moles, fair skin, a history of sunburn or relatives with melanoma. In children, it is also useful to monitor congenital moles.
